Towanda Jr./Sr. High School Cell Phone Policy

Towanda Area School District understands that cell phones are a part of our society. In order to maintain a positive and focused learning environment, Towanda Jr./Sr. High School has implemented the following cell phone guidelines:

(These guidelines include, but are not limited to: cell phones, earbuds/headphones, smart watches, tablets, gaming devices, etc.)

Guidelines

  1. Cell Phone Use Prohibition:
    1. Cell phones are prohibited from being used in the school building and on the school campus (including but not limited to: classrooms, study halls, hallways, gymnasiums, locker rooms, bathrooms, etc.) during school hours unless specifically allowed by administration.
  2. Storage of Cell Phones:
    1. Students are expected to power off their cell phones and have hem stowed in their backpack or locker during school hours.
  3. Lunch period Privilege:
    1. Students in 7th and 8th grades are not permitted to use phones during their lunch period.
    2. 9th-12th grade students are allowed to use their cell phone during their lunch period. This privilege is limited to only the cafeteria. Cell phones may not be used in the bathrooms.
    3. Cell phones must be turned off and stowed away for the remainder of the school day.
    4. This privilege may be revoked if it is abused or these guidelines are not followed.
  4. Exceptions:
    1. Exceptions to these guidelines may be granted for medical reasons. Prior administrative approval is required.
  5. Emergency Situations
    1. In case of emergency, parents/guardians may contact the school office to reach your child.
    2. Students will be permitted to use their cell phones in the office with permission from the administration.

 

Consequences

  1. First Offense
    1. Cell phone will be confiscated and turned into the office. Student may pick up cell phone at the end of the day.
  2. Second offense
    1. Cell phone will be confiscated and turned into the office.
    2. Student’s parent/guardian will be notified and required to retrieve the phone from the office.
    3. Lunch Detention may also be assigned
    4. Student is not permitted to bring cell to school for 10 days.
  3. Third Offense
    1. Cell phone will be confiscated and turned into the office.
    2. Student’s parent/guardian will be notified and required to retrieve the phone from the office.
    3. Lunch Detention/ISS may also be assigned
    4. Student is not permitted to bring cell permitted to school for 45 days.
  4. Further offenses
    1. The student will receive increasing disciplinary measures as decided by the administration.
    2. Student is not permitted to bring cell permitted to school for remainder of school year.

Implementation

  1. Teacher & Staff Enforcement:
    1. Teachers and staff are responsible for the enforcement of these guidelines.
    2. A student violating the above cell phone guidelines will have their phone confiscated and turned into the office.
  2. Student and Parent/Guardian Acknowledgement:
    1. Students and their parents/guardians will be required to sign the student handbook form indicating they have read and understand these guidelines.
    2. If you need to contact your student during school hours, please contact the office.

*Changes and additions to these rules and regulations may be made by administration at any time in order to deal with the problems and situations that may arise.
